Collection, 1862-1917

The collection consists of three letters written by Mitchell during the Civil War. Two letters describe his experiences in a military hospital and one discusses the siege at Petersburg. There is a cabinet card portrait of Mitchell in later life and two photo albums of family pictures at the time of the Civil War.

Adolphus Origen Mitchell was born in Indiana around 1840. In 1863 he was a resident of Abington in Wayne County, Indiana at the time of his enlistment in the Union Army. He was immediately mustered into Company C of the Thirteenth Indiana Infantry Regiment. He later transferred to Company K of that regiment and mustered out of the military in September 1865 at Goldsboro, North Carolina. After the war he married Mollie J.
